Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C: What You Need to Know

Beginning June 22, 2026, all workplace first aid training delivered by the college will transition to the new national CSA Z1210:24 standard, a modernization framework mandated by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). To comply with this provincial shift into national training tiers, Durham College is updating its safety programming and course titles across our catalogue.

Standard First Aid & CPR is Now Intermediate First Aid & CPR

The most immediate change you will notice when registering is this official update to our primary certification names:

What changes for learners?

While the name is updating to match national standards, the robust curriculum, life-saving skills, and high caliber of training remain exactly the same. Durham College remains a fully vetted, trusted provider aligned with the WSIB's modernized safety frameworks.

Does this still meet WSIB Regulation 1101 requirements?

Yes, absolutely. Even though the static text within Ontario Regulation 1101 will continue to reference the term "Standard First Aid" during this transition period, the WSIB officially recognizes Intermediate First Aid as its precise direct equivalent. Completing this training fully satisfies all of your occupational health safety mandates, co-op prerequisites, and academic field placement criteria.

Will my current Standard First Aid certification still be valid?

Yes. If you already hold a valid Standard First Aid certificate, it remains fully recognized by Ontario employers, regulatory bodies, and academic institutions until its official expiry date. You do not need to retake the course early.

When your three-year certification window finishes, you will simply enroll in our Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C recertification session. Furthermore, the updated provincial guidelines offer greater flexibility, allowing you to easily recertify an out-of-province certificate right here in Ontario, provided your original training followed the national CSA framework.

What skills are covered in the Intermediate First Aid course?

The curriculum continues to deliver the comprehensive, hands-on emergency training required across all major industries, including:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage.
  • Management of life-threatening emergencies (e.g., severe bleeding, choking).
  • Care for environmental emergencies, fractures, and sudden neurological incidents.

Staying compliant with these evolving regulations ensures your portfolio matches top-tier workplace safety requirements while boosting your professional marketability.
