Pathophysiology I

This course will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of pathophysiology and related disease processes. The underlying concepts of homeostasis, cellular changes, inflammation, infection, healing and abnormal immune responses will be examined. The basic concepts of fluid - electrolyte and acid – base balance will be analyzed and how imbalances can promote disorder in the body. Common diagnostic testing will be examined and how they are utilized in the process of diagnosing disease and prognostic outcomes. Specific diseases and disorders will be discussed to apply the concepts learned and how they affect the structure and functioning of the human body. Basic treatment modalities are will be reviewed as a foundation of learning to be expanded upon in the practicum experience.

Notes:

  • The minimum passing grade for this course is 60%.

  • PROCTORED MID-TERM AND FINAL EXAMS: This course uses an online proctored exam(s)
  • To complete the proctored exam, you are responsible to follow the directions in the course to setup your account and schedule your exam
  • There is no fee to use this service as long as you schedule the exam and complete it within the required timelines. Should you miss your scheduled exam time, or do not schedule within the required timelines, you will be required to pay all applicable exam fees.
  • The minimum technical requires can be found within the course. Note, you must use a PC or MAC computer (chrome books, tablets etc. are not permitted). A web cam and have access to a high-speed Internet connection is also required.
  • During your online exam, there may be software required to be installed on your computer to enable the proctor to effectively monitor your exam session remotely. Once your exam session is completed, the proctor will conclude the session and any software can be removed from your workstation.
  • A room scan (with video and pictures) will be completed prior to beginning the exam and may be requested at any point during your exam session.

  • COURSE EQUIVALENCY: PATH 3505 is equivalent only if students have successfully completed BOTH PATH 3583 AND PATH 4583. Students must apply for a credit transfer to have their courses credited towards PATH 3505. Please see the Credit Transfer process.

  • FAST TRACK:
    The Fast Track (accelerated) course option cannot be completed in less than 7 weeks. Students must successfully complete PATH 3583 BEFORE they begin PATH 4583. Students should not register to complete PATH 3583 and PATH 4583 simultaneously. These are asynchronous courses that require students to follow a weekly schedule and complete all assessments within the assigned timeframes. These are not self-paced offerings.

    Note: Please let the instructor know on the first day of your intention to fast-track the course.

    Pathophysiology I – PATH 3583 is scheduled for Semester Intake .
    Pathophysiology II – PATH 4583 is scheduled for both Semester Intake & Monthly Intake .
    Students attempting to complete both courses in one semester should register for PATH 3583 for a semester start and PATH 4583 for the following monthly intake start.

    • Or ANAT 1500 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
    • And HASS 2500 HEALTH ASSESSMENT )
