Additional Indigenous resources for students and employees

This message is being shared on behalf of the First Peoples Indigenous Centre (FPIC). For more information and to connect, please email indigenous@durhamcollege.ca.

Following yesterday’s message about the recent discovery of the mass grave at the former residential school on the land of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in Kamloops, British Columbia, the First Peoples Indigenous Centre (FPIC) is reminding students and employees of additional support available at the centre, including:

  • One-on-one support with Indigenous Coaches;
  • Access to Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers; and
  • Information and referral to services and local Indigenous community organizations.

If you need further support, the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is also available to help former residential school students, their families, and others affected at 1.866.925.4419.

To learn more about Canada’s shared history with Indigenous people and reconciliation, the FPIC invites all Durham College (DC) community members to participate in the following workshops:

  • Durham Indigenous Voices: Reconciliation, Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence on Thursday, June 17, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This four-part series begins with a focus on reconciliation and features a panel of Indigenous speakers from the Durham Region, with special guest Dr. Pam Palmater. Register online.
  • DC Indigenous Histories and Reconciliation Modules located under the self-registration tab on DC Connect.
  • Indigenous Learning Circle to continue the conversation from the reconciliation modules, allowing employees and students the opportunity to ask questions. Register online for the Wednesday, June 9 event from 2 to 3 p.m.
