Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, including Canadian John Humphrey, the UDHR establishes and outlines fundamental human rights that are universally protected. The UDHR outlines that regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, human beings are entitled to fundamental rights, including the right to equality, and the right to life, liberty and security of the person. Further, the UDHR recognizes the right to freedom of religion and speech and the right to participate in the cultural life of the community. The UDHR is the most translated document in the world and is available in more than 500 languages.
