Remembrance Day

Date:
November 11
Event Category:

Remembrance Day is observed annually on November 11 to honour and remember the Canadians who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. The day commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the women and men who gave their lives in service to Canada, as well as recognizing veterans, current members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the families and loved ones affected by their service.

The date marks the armistice that brought an end to the First World War on November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Each year, Canadians wear poppies as a symbol of remembrance, appreciation and respect, and pause for two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Remembrance Day is an opportunity to reflect on the human cost of war, recognize the contributions of those who have served and reaffirm our commitment to remembering their sacrifices. We encourage the Durham College community to take time to reflect, learn about Canada’s military history and honour all those who have served and continue to serve. Lest we forget.
