Prior Learning Recognition and Academic Accommodations

DC recognizes the value of your military training and experience.

Through DC's Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process, military-connected learners may be eligible to receive academic credit for knowledge and skills gained through their service. Whether you have completed technical training, leadership development, or specialized occupational programs, PLAR offers a pathway to acknowledge what you already know.

General education credit recognition
Durham College recognizes the learning and leadership developed through military training. Eligible students who have completed Canadian Armed Forces Developmental Periods (DPs) may receive exemptions from General Education (GNED) courses required in their program (excluding any required Indigenous elective).

  • DP1: Earns 1 GNED credit exemption
  • DP2: Earns 2 GNED credit exemptions
  • DP3: Earns 3 GNED credit exemptions

Contact DC Transfer Services to learn more about eligibility and how to have your military training assessed.

Academic flexibility and accommodations
Durham College (DC) recognizes that military service involves unique responsibilities and commitments that can affect your academic schedule. We work with military-connected learners to identify flexible options, including program holds and adjusted timelines where appropriate. You are encouraged to connect with your program coordinator early to discuss your situation.
