Important: Credit recognition is not applied automatically. Students seeking Military Developmental Period (DP) exemptions must submit a request for assessment and provide supporting documentation.

Ready to apply? Complete the Developmental Period (DP) General Education (GNED/COMM 1100) Exemption Form before submitting your documentation.

Required Documentation
To be considered for General Education (GNED) and/or COMM 1100 exemptions based on Military Developmental Period (DP) training, students must submit a Military Personnel Record Resume (MPRR) along with their exemption request.

Additional supporting documentation may include:

• Training transcripts or course completion records
• Military certificates and credentials
• Course descriptions, learning objectives, or training standards (where available)
• Other documentation demonstrating prior learning and experience

The GNED and COMM 1100 exemptions outlined above are available through Durham College's Military Developmental Period assessment process.

If you would like additional military training, occupational certifications, specialized technical training, or other prior learning assessed for course-specific credit, separate applications may be required:

• Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR): For credit based on prior learning, workplace training, military experience, and demonstrated competencies. Complete a PLAR application.
• Course Transfer (CT): For credit based on postsecondary courses completed at another recognized institution. Submit a Course Transfer application.

Transfer Services can help determine the most appropriate pathway based on your educational background, military training, and academic goals.

Step 1: Complete the Developmental Period (DP) General Education (GNED/COMM 1100) Exemption Form and submit any supporting military documentation.

Step 2: Transfer Services reviews and verifies completed military training and supporting documentation.

Step 3: Military training is assessed against established exemption criteria and, where applicable, Durham College course and program learning outcomes.

Step 4: Students are notified of the assessment decision and any approved exemptions are added to their academic record.

Most requests are reviewed within approximately 4-6 weeks of receiving all required documentation. Students will be contacted if additional information or supporting documentation is needed.

A learner who has completed DP1 submits the Developmental Period (DP) General Education (GNED/COMM 1100) Exemption Form along with their Military Personnel Record Resume (MPRR) and supporting training documentation.

Following review, the learner is approved for:

• One General Education (GNED) exemption

The learner has also completed specialized technical training through the Canadian Armed Forces and would like additional course-specific credit. They are advised to submit a separate PLAR application so the training can be assessed against the learning outcomes of specific Durham College courses.
