June 8, 2011

Event will also feature Honorary Credential recipient; four Alumni of Distinction award winners and two Professor Emeritus recipients

OSHAWA, ONT. – Durham College will recognize its graduates next week as almost 2,900 students celebrate at the college’s annual spring convocation ceremony on Thursday, June 16 and Friday, June 17.

Students will be joined by family and friends as well as Durham College faculty and staff as they receive their diplomas and certificates from the schools of Health & Community Services, Interdisciplinary Studies & Employment Services and Justice & Emergency Services on June 16. Graduates from the schools of Business, IT & Management, Continuing Education, Media, Art & Design, Science & Engineering Technology and Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship & Renewable Technology will be honoured on June 17.

In addition, the college will present its second-annual Honorary Credential to Roger Anderson, in the category of Public and Community Relations.

Under Anderson’s vision, tenure and leadership, as chair and chief executive officer of the Region of Durham, the region has achieved several significant accomplishments. These include, the creation of the Durham region-wide transit system; the amalgamation of six ambulance services into a highly respected emergency medical services network; and the creation of a provincially recognized, region-wide Green Bin composting and plastic bag recycling initiative making Durham Region a leader in Ontario with more than 50 per cent waste diversion. Anderson continues to make an ongoing community impact including leading the charge that resulted in the provincial government’s recent announcement that it will complete the Highway 407/Highway 35/115 extension by 2020.

Anderson and the Region of Durham have been true friends and colleagues to Durham College over the years. They have played a key role in the ongoing three-phase Whitby campus expansion at the college and raising close to $4 million over the past 14 years through the annual Chairman’s Charity Classic golf tournament, which goes toward supporting charities and Durham College students in financial need.
Two Durham College retirees, Jim Anderson, a former professor with the School of Business, IT & Management, and Karen Hodgins, a former professor with the School of Justice & Emergency Services, will both receive the designation of Professor Emeritus for their exemplary service during their time at Durham College and outstanding contributions post-retirement.
Alumni of Distinction awards will be presented to James (Jim) Cook, Kellie Garrett, Jennifer (Lee) Iacob and Dan Quinn.

Cook, a 1983 Business Administration – Data Processing program graduate, is the IT manager – Contact Centre Vendor Management with TD Bank Group.

Garrett, a 1986 Public Relations graduate, is Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) senior vice-president, Strategy, Knowledge and Reputation. In 2007, Garrett was named one of Canada’s top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network and in 2009, one of Saskatchewan’s 10 Most Influential Women.

Iacob, a 2004 Nursing graduate, is the founder and director of Arms of Love, an organization working with urban Roma children and their families in Bucharest, Romania. She works with hundreds of Romanian children, teaching them hygiene and social skills, math, literacy and physical education.
She also assists impoverished families in Romania by providing workshops to mothers and caregivers on first aid, hygiene, and childhood illnesses.
