Roger Anderson receives DC Honorary Credential

Chair and chief executive officer of the Region of Durham honoured at spring convocation ceremony

Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College congratulates Roger Anderson on receiving this year’s Honorary Credential in Public and Community Relations at the 2011 spring convocation ceremony that took place on June 17 at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont.

A resident of the Regional Municipality of Durham (Region of Durham) since his early teens, Anderson served as a dedicated constable for Durham Regional Police Services for 10 years. In 1992, he formed his own real estate company, RE/MAX Quality One Ltd. which now successfully operates with a staff of 40.

Anderson was first elected into municipal politics as a councillor in 1985 and then served as regional councillor and deputy mayor for the town of Ajax from 1991 to 1997. He has been chair and chief executive officer of the Region of Durham since December 1997, and chair of the Durham Region Transit Commission since its inception on January 1, 2006.

Anderson has helped build the institutional foundation of the region; contributing significantly to Durham College and other community-building organizations. His personal efforts, including the long-running annual Chairman’s Charity Golf Classic have raised millions of dollars for various charities including students in financial need at Durham College.

Anderson continues to make an ongoing community impact including leading the charge on many issues to ensure the Region of Durham is the place of choice to live, learn and work.

At Durham College, the student experience comes first. In September 2010, the college welcomed more than 30,000 students to campus including more than 7,600 full-time post-secondary students as well as part-time, Second Career and continuing education students; apprentices; and online learners. The college offers a wide range of market-driven programs in a number of different disciplines including business, information technology, energy, media, art, design, general arts and sciences, skilled trades, justice, emergency services and health care, enabling them to develop the skills required to meet the demands of today’s job market.

A three-phase expansion of the college’s Whitby campus is currently underway. Phase 1 opened in September 2009 followed by Phase 2 in May 2011. Phase 3 will see the creation of a 30,000-square-foot building focused on agriculture, culinary, hospitality and tourism. Accommodating approximately 950 new students, it will house new classrooms and labs and offer a full-service, green-certified restaurant, lounge and greenhouse.

In addition, a new Student Services building opened at the Oshawa campus in January 2011.
