DC to host CCAA Golf National Championship

Canada’s top collegiate golfers will be coming to Oshawa this fall as Durham College has been selected to host the 2012 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) golf national championship.

“We are very excited our bid was approved by the National body and also about being given the opportunity to host such a major national event right here in the Durham Region,” said Ken Babcock, Durham College athletic director. “We are thrilled to have this high profile event come to the area. The tournament host committee will ensure everything from the course to the hospitality will be first class for this major event.”

The national championship will be held at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club from October 15-19 and will feature the top men’s and women’s collegiate golf programs in the country, battling it out for the national crown.

Last year, the field consisted of 84 student-athletes from 18 post-secondary institutions competing for both team and individual titles.

The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club was built in 1895. However, the original charter for the club was granted, at its present site, on Nov. 21, 1906. Since 1911, when the first bunkers were built, the course has continued to be groomed, modified and refined to sustain its challenge. Many of these modifications were designed by Canada’s foremost golf course architect, Stanley Thompson, which qualifies the Club as a “Stanley Thompson Course”. This century old layout with its thousands of mature trees, well-manicured fairways and greens, is The Hidden Gem of Durham Region.

“The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club will be an excellent venue to host this years’ national championship,” said Babcock. “The course is second to none and I am certain that it will provide a challenge for all of the participants involved.”

Durham has hosted this event twice in 2001 and 2002. Durham College also hosted the RCGA University/College golf championship in 2011.

The Lords have hosted award winning and highly regarded national championships including men’s volleyball (1990 & 2003), women’s volleyball (1990), men’s soccer (1999), women’s soccer (1999), men’s & women’s golf (2001 & 2002), baseball (2009) and men’s basketball (2011).
