DC wins the inaugural women’s soccer Campus Cup

Lords captain Chelsey Rogatinsky scored in the 90th minute to lead Durham College to a 3-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks in the inaugural women’s soccer Campus Cup played in front of a crowd of 2,000 fans on Wednesday night.

Rogatinsky, the 2011 OCAA defensive player of the year, led the Lords offensive push in extra time and fired one past the UOIT goalkeeper to give the Lords the one goal victory.

The game winning goal came two minutes after UOIT had tied things up, as Tina Solomone scored for the Ridgebacks.

It was the veteran’s who did all of the scoring for Dave Staley’s squad as returnees Megan Arsenault and Leanna Fomenko scored the other two goals for Durham College.

Kylie Bordeleau recorded UOIT’s first goal of the game late in the first half.

It was a great atmosphere at the game with the students cheering on their respective schools while wearing their school colours. Both the coaches and players were excited to be a part of the event, knowing that a rivalry and tradition has been started.

Your-SA vice presidents Jesse Cullen (UOIT) and Kayleigh Johnston (Durham College) were on hand to present the Campus Cup to the Durham College women’s team and honorary captain President Don Lovisa.

The Campus Cup was Durham’s 2012 debut. The Lords will now host the defending OCAA champion Humber Hawks in an exhibition match on Friday night. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

For UOIT, it was their third match in six days as the Ridgebacks picked up their first ever OUA victory on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 decision over the University of Windsor. The team will head to Guelph on Friday for a match against the Gryphons.

In other news the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over the Durham Lords to win the fourth annual men’s Campus Cup. The win marked UOIT’s first ever Campus Cup title, as Durham College had won the previous three matches.
