Lords host the Durham College Athletic/Academic Luncheon

The Durham College Athletic Department hosted the third annual Athletic/Academic Awards Luncheon at the Student Centre on Tuesday, April 10.

Student-athletes, as well as friends, family, coaches, staff and faculty all attended to show their support and pride as the athletic department honoured the athletes for their academic achievements for the 2011-12 season.

The Bert Dejeet Memorial Scholastic Award was presented to Colby Attwood (Men’s Soccer – Mechanical Engineering Technology) and Kaela Stinchcombe-Brown (Women’s Soccer & Basketball – General Arts) for having the Top Overall GPA of all varsity student-athletes.

Earning national recognition was Erin Emery (Women’s Basketball – 911 Emergency) as she earned the SIRC CCAA Academic All-Canadian Award. The award is the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete award, characterizing their mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve this honour, a student-athlete must be named to his/her respective provincial all-star team in a CCAA Sport, and must achieve a GPA standing of 3.5 on a 5.0 scale.

“What a great honour for some very deserving individuals who received national and provincial awards today,” said Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics. “We are extremely proud of our student-athletes at Durham College and their drive and determination for success.”

Overall, Durham College student-athletes earned 20 OCAA All-Academic awards and five CIBA All-Academic awards for their outstanding accomplishments in both the classroom and athletics.

The 42nd annual Durham College athletic banquet will be taking place Thursday, April 12 at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association Hall in Oshawa, Ont.
