Geek Freaks dance their way to victory on Much Music

The movers and shakers of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Geek Freaks dance crew (Geek Freaks) are on a steady climb to success after taking first place at Much Music’s New.Music.Live’s  (NML) weekly Dance Crew Battle on April 19. It was the second win for the crew, comprised of 13 members, in less than a week, with the Geek Freaks also coming in second at NML’s week-long dance competition, which concluded on April 13.

The weekly Dance Crew Battle is judged by singer Danny Fernandes; performer, entertainer and choreographer Janet “L” Castillo; and choreographer and director Lenny Len, with the trio praising the Greek Freaks for its ever-changing routines and ability to connect to each song differently.

“What you put into it is what you get,” said Wayne Carasco, the leader of Geek Freaks and a part-time Durham College student. The team, who he considers family, studies between practices and takes every free second to prepare for exams while putting its best effort into getting ready for a show.

While the Geek Freaks are beginning to earn more recognition for their dance-floor moves, the group remains true to its goal to showcase what hip-hop is about while acting as role models. The crew hopes to encourage others to pursue their passions because it believes passion is what drives you to keep going and achieve success.

Next on the agenda for the crew is a return to Much Music in the coming weeks followed by several shows throughout the summer including one at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.

“We like to tell stories with our dance,” said Carasco. “It’s starting to feel real and the exposure on Much Music has introduced us to many new fans.”
