Donors, students celebrate academic success at annual scholarship ceremony

With faculty, staff, family, friends and corporate donors looking on, 184 Durham College students were honoured on November 22 at the college’s Scholarship Ceremony. The annual event, which recognizes students for their outstanding academic achievements, presented in-course scholarships valued at a total of $135,000.

“The awards received tonight and the monetary value associated with them, go a long way to help many of us with the high costs of a post-secondary education,” said Meredith Walker, a third-year Sport Business Management student and scholarship recipient.

Durham College President Don Lovisa, along with representatives from each academic school, congratulated each recipient as they crossed the stage.

“The success of the students is truly inspirational as I know that many of you balance your studies with employment, family responsibilities and other significant demands,” said Lovisa. “Your dedication to academic excellence makes you exemplary role models for your peers.”

Students also had an opportunity to express their appreciation to more than 35 individual, organizational and corporate award donors for their financial contributions at a pre-ceremony reception.

“As a long-time donor, it is once again my pleasure to provide assistance to students in financial need,” said Roger Anderson, chairman, Durham Region. “It is my hope that this investment in post-secondary students will have a significant impact on the prosperity of Durham Region, our province and our country through a well-educated workforce.”
