Durham College athletics win big over the weekend

The Durham Lords men’s and women’s golf teams competed at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) golf national championship in Kamloops, B.C. the weekend of October 15 to 17. The women’s team won gold along with silver and bronze individual medals.

Durham College athletics enjoyed some big wins the weekend of October 15 to 17, taking home four team gold medals, an individual silver medal and an individual bronze medal over the course of three days.

On the green, the women’s golf team won gold at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) golf national championship in Kamloops, B.C. and golfers Tiffany Albath and Kayleigh Kraemer finished second and third respectively in the individual competition, securing three national gold medals for women’s golf.

In addition, the women’s fastball team won the 15thannual Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women’s Fastball Championship with a 10-1 victory over the St. Clair Saints in the championship game. The gold medal victory marks the Lords 15th provincial title in women’s fastball, the most of any college in the OCAA.

The men’s baseball team also enjoyed the taste of victory, capturing the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) Ontario Conference title on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Humber Hawks in the championship series with a win of 6-0. The win marks the Lords fifth Ontario championship in the last six years and secures their spot in the CIBA National Championship set, taking place from Friday, October 22 to Sunday, October 24 at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ont.

The men’s basketball team also enjoyed the feeling of success, defeating the Fanshawe Falcons 82-67 to win the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, which was held at Durham College on October 16. The win marked the sixth time the Lords have won the tip-off in the tournament’s 34-year history and the first time in 13 years that the college has won the title.

The men’s basketball team opens its 2010 regular OCAA season on Wednesday, October 27 at George Brown College with its first home game beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 29 against Fleming College. Canada’s top men’s basketball talent will also head to Oshawa this spring when the college hosts the 2011 CCAA national championship from Tuesday, March 15 to Saturday, March 19.
