October 8, 2010 Crowds of students attended the annual Career and Education Fair hosted by the college’s Career Services department this week. The fair, held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on October 7, gave students a chance to meet with high-profile potential employers including Cameco, Bruce Power, American Express, Durham Regional Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine. Attendees had an opportunity to visit each employer booth and discuss potential career paths, individual hiring practices and post-graduation employment opportunities. In addition, several colleges and universities were on hand to promote the value of pursuing further post-secondary study. Schools in attendance included Lakehead, Laurentian and Trent universities, the University of Toronto, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College. “I came to the Career and Education Fair to look at different offerings and job opportunities that I might not normally have heard about,” said Angela Moorcroft, a second-year Business Administration – Human Resources program student. “I’m enjoying it so far. There are more people than I expected which is great because it gives me more options of who I could approach for a possible career when I graduate next year.” Career Services provides services to students, recent graduates, employers and faculty all year round including assisting students and graduates with their job search and career development. Students also have access to the Hired Portal, which enables them to search for job, internship and co-op opportunities; sign up for e-mail notifications of new job postings; book career and job search advising appointments; and register for employer information sessions and workshops. In addition, Career Services provides employers with a number of recruitment services including free job postings, access to students for internship and co-op opportunities, recruitment events and more.
