Durham College wins gold at 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association golf championship

The Durham Lords men’s and women’s golf team won gold and silver medals at the 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association golf championship on October 6.

Golfers from the Durham Lords men’s and women’s golf team were decked out in winning colours last week when they won gold and silver medals at the 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) golf championship held in Thornbury, Ont. on October 6.

The women’s golf team won three medals with the team winning gold, Kayleigh Kraemer winning the individual gold medal and Tiffany Albath winning the individual silver medal. In addition, the men’s team brought home some hardware, winning the silver medal in the team competition.

For Kraemer, it was her first OCAA women’s individual title after shooting rounds of 71-76-72 for a three-day total of three-over par 219. Kraemer finished ahead of Albathby just seven strokes (80-74-72) as the two completed the 1-2 finish for Durham College. Kraemer and Albath’s combined total of 445 gave the Lords the gold medal in the team competition, placing them ahead of the Humber Hawks by 81 strokes.

On the men’s side, David Lang,Brad Hickey,James Hoffman,Rob Lewis, Donald ShawandRobbie Untinen competed together to win the silver with a combined team total of 915.

“I am really proud of the way our team played this week,” said Mike Duggan, head coach of the Durham Lords. “Kayleigh and Tiffany were simply amazing while the guys fought hard to bring home the silver medal. I cannot say enough about the way our team played and represented the college.”

This is the first time since 2005 Durham College’s women’s team won an OCAA gold medal and since 2006 that the men’s team won silver.

Next up, the Lords will turn their attention to the 2010 PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association golf national championship hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. beginning on Monday, October 11.
