Launch of the Starsailor Rocket

Welding faculty contribute to rocket launch

Experts from Durham College’s (DC) Welding Engineering Technician program helped achieve a significant milestone in the pursuit of space exploration with Space Concordia. On August 15, 2025, the Starsailor rocket launched from northern Québec, marking Canada’s first space launch in more than 25 years. DC faculty welded the rocket’s high-pressure fuel tanks and interior baffling, which were critical to both safety and performance. Their involvement, which began in 2019, has now expanded, with Space Concordia inviting DC to support its next prototype. The project will create new opportunities for students to contribute to Canada’s aerospace future.
