This course provides an introduction and overview of typical language development of preschoolers and young school-aged children. The nature and types of language disorders are also explored with respect to the impact on the child and family. Language intervention approaches applicable to implementing program recommendations for preschool and young school-aged populations is covered, including an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL). Students are exposed to a sampling of screening and assessment tools, data collection methods, lesson plans, reports, intervention activities, and strategies reflective of various treatment approaches. Phonological awareness, the development of early literacy, and reading and writing are also introduced, along with techniques to enhance skill development. The role of the Communicative Disorders Assistant in implementing program recommendations is emphasized. This course also includes an observation component where students observe the language skills of preschool children.
