This course provides students with an in-depth knowledge of low-tech and high-tech augmentative and alternative (AAC) systems and how they can be implemented to accommodate a variety of physical, perceptual, motor and cognitive disabilities. Students learn to provide the AAC user with basic communication skills, the ability to access education, and to participate in community and family activities. Students learn how to create and use AAC strategies and how to support individuals who use these strategies. Use of computer programs, clinical software, portable speech systems and modifications facilitates students' technical knowledge and application in this field. Students learn about assessment reports and tools, intervention activities and strategies reflective of various treatment approaches. The role of the Communicative Disorders Assistant in implementing AAC programming recommendations is emphasized. This course also includes a lab component where students can create materials and practice using a variety of AAC devices and strategies.
