Students learn the theoretical background and relevant skills pertaining to treatment methodology in articulation, phonology, and oral-motor functions. Normal developmental milestones/sequences of speech sound production, how to stimulate speech sounds with preschoolers and school-aged clients and the intervention process are discussed. Students are exposed to a sampling of screening and assessment tools, data collection and tracking methods, lesson plans, reports, speech sound stimulation techniques, intervention activities and strategies reflective of various treatment approaches. Special populations and topics are also covered as they pertain to speech sound production, including oral-motor disorders, Developmental Apraxia of Speech (DAOS), childhood dysarthria, cleft lip and palate, cranio-facial syndromes, etc. The role of the Communicative Disorders Assistant in implementing program recommendations is emphasized. This course also includes an observation component where students observe the speech production skills of preschool children.
