Music Industry Overview introduces students to the domestic and global music business. We identify and assemble its constituent parts, explore its growth, review trends, and summarize its current status. The foundation of the music industry is the legal rights that exist in a song (music and lyrics): Copyright law. We discuss the tenets of copyright; how they are established, administered, and enforced - locally and internationally. Students will gain an understanding of how music publishers, record labels, and concert promoters (to name a few of the players) operate to maximize the economic returns from the ownership of copyrights.
