Students learn concepts to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the client of all ages, their families and self; using effective communication strategies as a way to promote, maintain and attain health. Areas of study include infection control and safe food handling, growth and development across the lifespan, therapeutic communication including using verbal and nonverbal strategies appropriately and the importance of active listening in health care. Medical terminology, reflective practice and ethical communication skills are all discussed as we develop professional roles and boundaries Nutrition and household management with an emphasis on culturally competent communication is explored. Learners will begin to understand the self and how the self impacts communication with others including strategies for conflict resolution.
