This course will cover the laws and ethical considerations affecting forensic investigations in Canada, and to a lesser extent in the USA and EU. It explores the specific legal responsibilities and restrictions applicable to cyber-investigator, and considers how to address disconnects between law, justice, ethics, and personal morality. This course helps students understand the interplay of professional codes of ethics and the law, and what constitutes acceptable professional competence, professional conduct, and duty of care. The course particularly focuses on criminal, procedural, evidentiary and privacy law and teaches students how to research legal topics and cases themselves. This course, in conjunction with the Computer Forensics course, teaches learners to properly present materials and evidence in Court, as a credible expert witness.
