Students will be exposed to broad legal areas that can give rise to criminal-related justice mediation and/or criminal-related justice alternative dispute resolution. Students will distinguish retributive and restorative approaches to justice, explore change and victimology theories, and examine controversial cases in Canadian restorative justice. Effective criminal-related justice mediators have a good understanding of the process within the justice system. Accordingly, students will review the courts in the Canadian criminal justice system by function and jurisdiction and examine various third party alternatives to court in criminal-related justice matters.
