In their third or fourth semester, our year 2 Police Foundations students are required to volunteer a minimum of 40 hours of their time during a 14-week semester Field Placement course. During this Field Placement course students will work with vulnerable, high need and/or disenfranchised populations. Not only does this Field Placement help our students to support people within their community, it assists our students in developing a sense of purpose, empathy, understanding and compassion, which are vocational skills for the complex challenges of law enforcement. The feedback from students at the end of their volunteering is through an in-depth reflection paper. The experiences our students report is often with words such as "eye opening", "Life changing", "It assisted my mental health". Many students continue to volunteer with their field placement hosts. Prior to students being eligible to participate in this course they must complete our Professional Development course including training modules in Health & Safety, WHMIS, AODA, Workplace Violence & Harassment and Diversity and a learning contact, WSIB form and health & safety checklist.
