This course provides students with an introduction to the importance of diversity in law enforcement. Students will learn strategies for effectively engaging and supporting diverse persons and communities. Concepts such as culture, ethnicity, race, discrimination and implicit bias are explored with a view to addressing contemporary issues such as racial profiling. Students learn the importance equity, diversity and inclusion in an organizational context. Laws and cases which influence the discrimination against various communities will be examined. Students will be exposed to the oppression of various cultural groups including Blacks and Indigenous Peoples. Students will learn about how police services focus on efforts to bridge gaps between themselves and the communities that they serve.
