This course relates to the role of the dental hygienist in the community and within public health. The course addresses the principles of the Canada Health Act and the socio-cultural, technological, and economic factors that influence health care. The dental hygiene process of care model, as it relates to community oral health, will be used to examine and explore health care delivery to diverse communities and populations. An awareness towards the oral health concerns and access to care issues will develop as the student explores the influence of professional values and ethics on health care. This will set the foundation for more advanced courses and service learning practicum in community settings.
