In Canada's multicultural society there are many diversity issues which can pose challenges for emergency services personnel. Navigating these issues requires professionalism, empathy, and inclusivity. Students will delve into the topics of prejudice, racism, stereotype, personal bias, power and privilege, systemic barriers, oppression, and shame, through the lens of a first responder. While engaging in critical examination, discussion and personal reflection, students are encouraged to arrive at an understanding of the human beings at the heart of these challenging issues. Students who successfully complete this course have begun to develop cultural competency, an essential skill set in today's society.
