In the NDE program, it is important that the student be provided with a broad spectrum of background information that will help them deal with the tasks, interpretation and decisions when performing inspection as a NDE technician in the laboratory or in the field. All NDE methods are supplemented by visual inspection at some stage. Visual testing is a method by which reflected or transmitted light from a test object is imaged with a light sensitive device (e.g. the human eye, a videoscope or imaging system. This course introduces: students to human vision and considerations; instruments used in visual testing; various materials, structures and facilities including visual discontinuities; and the development of visual inspection instructions. This course also gives some insight into the interplay of the various NDE and inspection/test methods in solving problems and understanding factors affecting component and material integrity.
