Students will be presented with a general overview of the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) required for the Direct Support Worker Role (DSW). An in-depth look at the competencies required for superior performance in a DSW role will also be examined. Students will learn the difference between KSA's, technical competencies, and behavioural competencies; and will gain an understanding of the Competency Model for the DSW role, as well as the behaviours required for success in the role. Students will be expected to apply their learning by demonstrating their understanding of how these competencies promote community inclusion, independence, self-determination, and an enhanced quality of life for the people they will support.
