This course provides students with foundational knowledge for community health nursing. It explores the evolving role of the community health nurse today as well as health promotion strategies utilized by community health nurses and governmental agencies such as Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Students are introduced to the concept of epidemiology, and will analyze how socioenvironmental factors influence health outcomes in a variety of populations. Students will use critical thinking to assess a community, and will analyze the data to identify a priority community health concern. Students will then apply current literature and community reports to explore the implications, interventions, and community supports related to the identified community health concern.
