This course is an introduction to fundamentals of construction specifications and their role in building design and the construction industry. It is essential that the specifications in contract documents be clear and accurate so that they are effective and enforceable. Principles and best practices of specification writing are studied along with practical applications in locating, retrieving and interpreting technical information found in the specifications. Topics presented include, but are not limited to, specification organization and format, language and style, specifying techniques, the relationship of specifications to other contract documents, and product research and evaluation. Students will use current industry information protocols in the preparation and presentation of documents.
