Durham College is a ministry-approved Apprenticeship Exemption Test Centre, authorized through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU), the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and the Ministry of Advanced Education & Skills Development (MAESD) to administer Apprenticeship Exemption Tests (AETs) for both apprentices and non-apprentices.
Apprenticeship Exemption: Apprentices & Non-Apprentices
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Must possess the entry requirements for the trade
- Your trade must be listed as an AET-eligible trade, as outlined by the MAESD
Apprenticeship Exemption: Non-apprentices Only
- You are not required to be an apprentice
- Must be an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) participant
Mobile Crane Operator (0-8 Ton) Construction
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Must present a completed MTCU Modular Training Application Form
- Must present a completed Learning Outcomes Completion Form (Page 18 of the Training Standard)
Asbestos Abatement Worker
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Provide proof of registration with the MLITSD in the 253W Asbestos Abatement Worker modular program
- Provide proof of completion of the Asbestos Abatement Worker training course
Asbestos Abatement Supervisor
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Provide proof of certification as an Asbestos Abatement Worker (253W)
- Provide proof of completion of the Asbestos Abatement Supervisor training course
- Apprenticeship Exemption tests must be written in order (if applicable)
- Most tests are closed book with a duration of 1- 3 hours
- All Apprenticeship Exemption & Modular Certification tests are conducted at the Whitby Campus Test Centre
- A PASS/FAIL letter will be sent to the candidate and the MLITSD/MAESD Apprenticeship Office within 10 working days of the test date.
- A minimum of 70% or higher is required to pass
Apprenticeship Exemption Test
- A minimum 90 calendar days wait period is required
- Proof of completed upgrading required to schedule subsequent attempts
Mobile Crane Operator (0-8 Ton) Construction
- A minimum 15 calendar day wait period is required
- One rewrite of the test is permitted without being required to show proof of further training.
- if unsuccessful after the second writing of the test, off-the-job training in areas that need improvement must be addressed before subsequent attempts are made.
- Proof of further training (the first fully completed and signed Learning Outcomes Completion Form and a second fully completed and signed Learning Outcomes Completion Form is required to schedule a third attempt at the Mobile Crane Operator test
Asbestos Abatement Worker/Supervisor
- A minimum 15 calendar day wait period is required
- One rewrite of the test is permitted without being required to show proof of further training.
- if unsuccessful after the second writing of the test, off-the-job training in areas that need improvement must be addressed before subsequent attempts are made.
- The trainee must provide proof of further training to schedule a third attempt.
The fee for writing an exemption test is $150 + HST. This fee is subject to change and is non-refundable.
