COVID-19 SPECIFIC RESOURCES FOR EMPLOYERS Funding Summary Business Credit Availability Program (BCAP) Loans are available through the Export Development Bank (EDC) and Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). The funds are intended to supplement wages and help employers cover expenses like rent, and can be accessed through the private financial institution with which the business has a pre-existing relationship. In cases where a private institution is unable to advance credit, loans may be obtained from EDC or BDC. Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy The new Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) provides a wage subsidy to eligible employers. The CEWS prevents further job losses, encourages employers to re-hire workers previously laid off as a result of COVID-19, and help better position Canadian companies and other employers to more easily resume normal operations following the crisis. Canadian Agricultural Partnership The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing to help the agri-food sector expand online, providing more opportunities for producers to grow their business and offer more food choices for families who are shopping from home during the COVID-19 outbreak. The funding is being provided through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (the Partnership). College and Community Social Innovation Fund Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, in collaboration with Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council are providing support for colleges and polytechnics to work with their partners to address this unprecedented crisis. NGen Canada Super Cluster Fund Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), the industry-led organization leading Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster, will invest to support companies as they prepare to produce critically needed technologies, equipment, and medical products to aid in the fight against COVID-19. Ontario Together Fund The Ontario government is launching a fund to help businesses provide innovative solutions or retool their operations in order to manufacture essential medical supplies and equipment, including gowns, coveralls, masks, face shields, testing equipment and ventilators. This new Fund will support the development of proposals submitted by businesses and individuals through the Ontario Together web portal. Supplementary Unemployment Benefits (SUB) Plan Employers can use a Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB) plan to increase their employees’ weekly earnings when they are unemployed due to a temporary stoppage of work, training, illness, injury or quarantine. IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program) IRAP will provide funding to SMEs looking to grow and generate profits through development and commercialization of innovated, technology-driven new or improved products, services or processes in Canada. Funding may apply to developing technology or hiring new graduates. Magnet Student Work Placement Program The program provides employers with wage subsidies to hire post-secondary students for paid work experiences. Students, in turn, benefit from quality work experience so they can secure employment in their chosen fields of study. Employer applications are now being accepted. Employment and Social Development Canada Funding programs from Employment and Social Development Canada are government grants and contributions that help support jobs, training, and social development. Grants are unconditional transfer payments that the government provides to individuals or organizations for activities that meet eligibility criteria set by the funding program. Contributions are similar to grants, except that, in order to receive funding and be reimbursed for specific costs, recipients need to meet certain performance conditions. Consideration will be given to identified organizations that provide essential services in the community and could provide youth jobs but did not apply for the Canada Summer Jobs program in 2020. Green Jobs Science & Technology Internship Program Green Jobs Science & Technology Internship Program (STIP) is funded by Natural Resource Canada. Green Jobs STIP provides wage subsidies for hiring organizations in the natural resource sectors. Co-operative Education Tax Credit The Co-operative Education Tax Credit is a refundable tax credit for Ontario-based co-op employers who hire students enrolled in a co-operative education program at an Ontario university or college. ECO Canada – Wage Subsidy Program ECO Canada's new CO-OP Program provides a wage subsidy of up to 50% to a maximum of $5000 to employers hiring students in an environmental role. As part of Canada's Work-Integrated Learning strategy, we are matching students with employers in the environmental sector to help them on the path to a bright career. Employers: ECO will provide up to 50% of a Co-op student’s pay in wage subsidies. Employers must be able to provide full-time work (minimum 30 hrs per week) for a 12 to 16-week term duration in an environmental capacity to be eligible for funding. MIHRC MiHR has completed research on the workforce barriers and opportunities facing three specific labour supply groups - Aboriginal peoples, immigrants to Canada and women. This research gathered a range of perspectives and experiences and the findings tell a compelling story. MiHR is proud to launch its Green Jobs program aimed at helping post-secondary graduates gain relevant and meaningful work experience in the mining sector. The objective of the program is to provide 120 meaningful internship opportunities in the mining sector related to science, technology, engineering and math. These jobs should have a focus on clean technology and innovation as well as provide an environmental benefit to Canada. Funding for this initiative is provided by the Government of Canada through Natural Resources Canada’s Green Jobs – Science and Technology Internship Program, as part of the Youth Employment Strategy. MiHR was selected as a delivery organization through a competitive process to deliver jobs to post-secondary graduates over the next two years. The Green Jobs Program is designed to help new graduates' transition to long-term employment or to pursue advanced studies, through work experience and mentorship provided by approved hiring organizations. Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) COVID 19 update: Postsecondary institutions are now eligible to hire students under SWPP and receive a wage subsidy, start dates and duration of placements will be more flexible, and students will be permitted to work remotely or from home. Through SWPP, employers can receive subsidies of up to 50% of a student’s wages, up to a maximum of $5,000.
