Firefighters are trained professionals who work within a team in fire suppression, attending accidents and emergencies in your communities and focus on educating the public in fire safety. A career firefighter is recognized as a responsible, caring, and brave professional who is well-trained in dealing with emergencies calmly and patiently, while enduring difficult situations.
Students in this program will:
Durham College (DC) offers pre-admission assessment testing to mature domestic applicants to meet admission requirements in English and/or math. Domestic applicants that are 19 years of age or older as of the start date of their program, and who do not have the required program credit(s) i.e., Grade 12 English and/or Grade 12 math are eligible to take an admissions assessment test.

The program will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to become a firefighter. The curriculum is based on the current National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) standards and is recognized across North America.
The course is delivered in a professional model and all program participants will be required to adopt the professional standards of behaviour required of a modern-day firefighter. Applicants are advised to participate in after-class hours since self-study is an essential component for success.
Note: All competencies specified for this program must be met therefore attendance in class, lab and off-site practicums is a requirement for success.
The program will consist of a heavy classroom component progressing to practical application. You will apply your practical skills in simulated and controlled live fire training scenarios on campus and at local fire training facilities. You will also receive assistance in preparations for the hiring process.
Upon successful completion of the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program, students will be eligible to participate in the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management provincial firefighter testing to obtain certification in the following:

Bunker Gear Rental
Students are required to rent Bunker gear through the approved program supplier.
This fee will be charged to your Student Account approximately 1 month after Semester 1 start.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Students are required to purchase PPE for protection and safety during practical courses.

Station Wear Uniform
Students are required to comply with the strict dress code policy of this program.

Standard First Aid/CPR C
CPR C certification is required and must remain valid for the duration of the program.

Bunker Gear Repair and/or Cleaning
Covers bunker gear that requires repair or cleaning and fee is determined and charged at the time of service.

Bunker Gear Late Return Fee
Covers missing, lost, or significantly damaged gear if gear is not returned to the Fire Technician in good condition upon request.
$2500 plus HST
Bunker Gear Replacement Fee
If bunker gear is returned late but declared in good condition after inspection by Fire Technician.
$80 plus HST

*this fee is not pro-rated for periods of less than a month
OFM Testing and Certification
Upon successful completion of the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program, students will be eligible to challenge the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level 1 & 2 and NFPA 1072 certifications through the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office.
$350 plus HST
Students will be given the opportunity to practice and progress in a controlled setting at a variety of training facilities. Live fire exercises will further enhance the student experience, including but not exclusive to fire behavior and progression, vehicle fires, Class B fires, fire streams and methods of interior fire attack.

Qualified graduates can go on to take Durham College's Fire Prevention & Technology program or 911 Emergency and Call Centre Communications program.

The Whitby Fire and Emergency Services Inclusivity Excellence Award will be given to two racialized students from Whitby who have been accepted into this program. The award covers full tuition, not including textbooks, equipment and ancillary services.
