National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This day honours the survivors of Indian Residential Schools, along with their families and communities. It serves as a powerful reminder of the deep and enduring impact these schools have had on Indigenous Peoples and is a vital component of the reconciliation process in Canada.

The creation of NDTR stems from the 80th Call to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which urges the federal government, in collaboration with Indigenous peoples, to establish a statutory holiday to commemorate this history. The Call to Action emphasizes the need for public commemoration to remain a vital aspect of reconciliation, ensuring that the history and legacy of residential schools are never forgotten.

“We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”

NDTR is an opportunity for all of us to learn from the past and contribute to building a future grounded in respect, understanding, and meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples. As part of this commitment, we encourage you to engage with the following activities that promote truth and reconciliation:

1. Attend a National Truth and Reconciliation Week event, virtual or in-person.

3. Learn about Indigenous history and the Indian Residential School system.

5. Listen to Indigenous voices, experiences, and stories.
6. Explore Indigenous voices through Indigenous music, art, films, novels, or academia.
7. Support (and volunteer with) Indigenous non-profit organizations.
8. Support Indigenous creators and businesses.

This day and the ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation call on all of us to actively participate in recognizing and addressing the injustices of the past. Let us come together on September 30 to reflect, learn, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.
