Journalism and Democracy Posted on December 9, 2019 at 4:27 pm. India is the world’s largest democracy and in the recent election, there were many issues writ large, including fake news and misinformation, violent videos on social media, the use of fact checking, and the impact of journalism on democracy. In brief, there were 900 million eligible voters and voting took place in seven phases from April 11 to May 19 with a whopping 67.4 per cent turnout, up almost two per cent from the 2014 election. The expected cost of the election was $9.5 billion, an estimated 40 per cent rise over the 2014 election. Using the recent election in India as a lens to look at the upcoming election in Canada, what can students learn about the connection between democracy and journalism as well as the impact of mass media communications on journalism, democracy and elections?
