April 13, 2011 The Durham College School of Media, Art & Design (MAD) is celebrating the success of one of its own. Charlotte Hale, associate dean, recently won the portrait category of Applied Arts Magazine’s 2011 Photography & Illustration Awards for her photo of a friend named Emery, which was taken at her former studio. “Emery came to my studio one day,” said Hale. “I hadn’t seen him in a while and heard he was ill. He sat for me and we shared a laugh. This was our last visit and I heard he passed away shortly after.” Hale started her career as a photographer after graduating from the Durham College Advertising program (formerly known as Advertising Administration) in 1993. Prior to becoming a contract photography professor with the college, then associate dean, she ran the Veni Vidi Gallery in Port Perry, Ont., which also included her photography studio. Nowadays she has a studio under renovation at her home on the island in Port Perry and continues to be involved in the world of photography. She was recently a juror for RMG Exposed, a photography auction event that took place in November 2010 and is a member of Cameras for Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving underprivileged teens the opportunity to create art through the use of cameras. The organization is currently planning a trip to both the Dominican Republic and Haiti in 2012. “Photographers chase moments but sometimes they offer themselves up in a moment of pure and honest exchange,” added Hale. “The strength of this image is in the truth of Emery’s spirit.” The Photography & Illustration Awards are held by Applied Arts magazine each year. Winners have their work showcased in the May/June 2011 issue of the magazine, are recognized on its website and are invited to the annual Winner’s Exhibit, which will take place in October in Toronto, Ont.
