Annual Tradesmart Career Fair held at Whitby campus

Close to 200 students gathered at the Whitby campus on March 21 when the Tradesmart Career Fair took place in the student lounge between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

An annual event hosted by the college each spring, the fair brings approximately 15 employers focused on the skilled trades and renewable energy sectors to campus, giving students an opportunity to make connections, ask questions and inquire about potential job opportunities post-graduation.

“The fair is important for both students and employers because it provides them with an opportunity to network with each other,” said Jana Forsyth, an employment advisor with the college’s Career Services department. “It is especially valuable for students because they learn about available job opportunities after graduation and where their career can take them.”

Employers in attendance included Cameco, Celestica Inc. Home Depot, Tradeability.ca, Vickery Electric Contracting Ltd. and Deep Foundations Contractors Inc. All were given the opportunity to recruit for full-time and summer employment from a pool of highly qualified and eager candidates with specific trade and technical skills.

“The employers who attend the fair are actually here to recruit in several fields. There are definite opportunities for students,” added Forsyth. “We have many success stories from previous fairs so helping students connect with employers is really important to us.”

Students attended from a wide range of full-time post-secondary programs including Construction Carpentry – Sustainable; Construction and Hoisting Techniques; Electrical Technician – Instrumentation and Control; Energy Audit Techniques; Gas Technician 2; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Techniques; Mechanical Techniques – Maintenance and Control; Motive Power Technician; Power Engineering Technician; Renewable Energy Technician; and Welding Techniques.

In addition to its focus on employment, the Tradesmart Career Fair also provides an excellent opportunity for students to truly experience the job search process. This includes the writing of résumés and cover letters, learning how to network in a professional environment and preparing for the job interview process.
