Practical Nursing Streams and Critical Care Nursing Durham College upholds the professional standards and entry-to-practice competencies established by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). To ensure that all students transferring into Nursing program streams (Practical Nursing and Critical Care Nursing) possess current and relevant clinical knowledge, the College enforces requirements on core nursing coursework. Core nursing courses, identified by course codes beginning with NURS and courses from the Critical Care Nursing program, contain essential theoretical and clinical knowledge that must reflect current and relevant standards of nursing practice. In alignment with CNO expectations regarding maintenance of competence and current practice knowledge, Durham College requires that any prior education or experience used for transfer credit or PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) toward core NURS or Critical Care Nursing courses must have been completed within the past three (3) years at the start of their program. Any NURS- or Critical Care Nursing course or related experience older than three (3) years will not be eligible for transfer credit or PLAR and will be denied. Students seeking admission or re-entry may be required to repeat expired coursework to ensure readiness for safe and competent clinical practice. This policy is designed to protect academic integrity, support student success, and ensure graduates are prepared to meet professional nursing standards in Ontario. Social Service Worker Graduates of this program are eligible to register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) which means they must demonstrate the core competencies and have practical hours supervised by someone who is appropriately credentialed and who is an experienced employee of the social service agency, familiar with the Social Services field. When applying for prior learning assessment recognition (PLAR), each of the field placement courses in this program require a separate application and demonstration of varied field experience. Example: An applicant may have worked within a single agency for several years and they may apply these hours/experience from that role, but they must demonstrate varied responsibilities within their experience to meet criteria of each field placement course. Note that the criteria of the Field Placement Preparation Course should be addressed prior to any of the field placement and seminar courses.
