To be eligible for credit transfer at Durham College, you must first accept an offer of admission to the program you’re interested in transferring credits toward. As the process is self-driven, you will need to determine which courses you would like to apply for transfer. The following types of course(s) can be submitted for transfer: Core Course: Develops proficiency in specific applied skills in field of study. General Education Elective (GNED XXXX): Employers value graduates who have an understanding of the world beyond their field of study. To help develop this knowledge, students complete general education (GNED) courses designed to strengthen critical analysis, problem solving, and communication skills. Breadth: Provides students in degree programs the opportunity to gain knowledge and an understanding of disciplines outside of their main field of study, resulting in graduates who can contribute thoughtfully, creatively and positively to their community and their workplaces. INDG (INDG XXXX): In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 62 to 65, Durham College has embedded mandatory First Nations, Métis, and Inuit general education elective courses in some of its programs. Students will have the opportunity to select from one of four courses where they will explore a variety of topics including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, culture and national issues. Review your Program of Study to determine which course(s) you may be eligible for. To view the courses in your program, please visit the links below and search the “courses” tab: FULL TIME PROGRAMS PROFESSIONAL AND PART-TIME LEARNING If you have started the program prior to the current academic year, please connect with your student advisor. Credit Transfer Criteria Minimum grade of 60%/C or the passing grade for the requested course (whichever is higher) is required for courses to transfer if completed at another institution. For courses previously completed at Durham College, the passing grade for the course sought is needed. CORE COURSE At least 80 per cent similar in content and learning outcomes. Check out our student self-evaluation guide to determine if your previous course(s) could be equivalent. Course content should be equivalent (or close-to equivalent) in hours of instruction (for example, a 30-hour course likely would not cover the same content in as much depth as an 84-hour course). The previous course completed can not be the prerequisite subject for the course being sought for credit. Courses should have been completed within the past five years. While courses completed more than five years ago can be submitted, they may be denied on the basis of age if there have been significant changes to practice or professional requirements, policies/legislation, or technology/software requirements. GNED The content must be theoretical versus applied and sufficiently different from your core course content in your current field of study. The previous course must be at minimum a three-credit course (42-hours). Course content can fit into one of the themes outlined in the “Themes Overview Section” of our GNED Eligibility Guide. BREADTH The previous course must be at minimum a three-credit course (42-hours). Course content does not overlap content in the degree field of study or in a related field. Content is broad/theoretical, not applied/technical skills. Content aligns with one of the breadth categories at Durham College found here. To be evaluated as an upper-level breadth, a degree course from another institution must have a prerequisite. Otherwise, it will be evaluated as lower-level breadth. There is no restriction on the age of the course being transferred provided the curriculum reflects current knowledge in the fields represented. In fields of study with evolving knowledge/research, age of the course will be considered. Please note, degree students will be required to submit their course outlines for any breadth courses that they wish to be evaluated for. Canadian Undergraduate Degree Holders Graduates with a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution are eligible for an exemption from COMM 1100 (Communication Foundations) and the maximum number of general electives (GNED) courses in their program of study, excluding INDG elective requirements. To receive credit, applicants must accept their offer and submit a transcript to Durham College, demonstrating the completion of their undergraduate degree. Students who have not received the exemption may apply for an assessment here. You will need to upload the following items as you fill out the online application: Official transcript – The transcript must cite your successful completion of the course with the required minimum grade of 60 per cent/C or passing grade for the course. If you provided an official transcript as part of the current admission cycle, then you are not required to provide a new transcript. Course outline – Course outlines provide evidence for why your previous course is equivalent to the course from which you are seeking exemption from the year it was taken. Please note, degree students will be required to submit their course outlines for any Breadth courses that they wish to be evaluated for. General Education Electives do not require submission of a course outline. Payment – There is a $16/course fee for each request. International credit transfer requests for studies completed outside Canada or the United States must include a course-by-course credential evaluation from either World Education Services (WES) or the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS). Requirements for previously completed Durham College Courses Identify which previous course(s) you feel are equivalent to course(s) in your new program. For courses previously completed at DC, no official transcript, course outline or payment is required. WHEN SHOULD I APPLY? Applications for credit transfer should be submitted prior to course commencement and will continue to be accepted until the tenth day of classes each semester for full-time programs. Students registered in a program through Professional and Part-time Learning may apply for credit transfer at any time during their studies. If you are applying for a large number of courses across the duration of your program, it is best to submit all in your first semester for review so that you can work with your student advisor to create a customized academic plan. The credit transfer process can begin as soon as you have accepted your offer to a program. HOW LONG WILL THE PROCESS TAKE? During peak periods, it may take four to six weeks to receive a response to your completed application. Please continue to attend class until a decision is made. You can monitor the results of your credit transfer application through the online portal you used (MyDC or MyCampus). Advanced Standing Pathways Some programs offer advanced standing for students who have completed a previous credential. These pathways allow you to leverage your prior education by receiving a block of transfer credits and, in some cases, start in a later semester of your chosen program. Important Notes: Not all programs offer advanced standing. Students who have completed courses from the same or a similar program previously should apply for semester 1 of the program and credit transfer on a course-by-course basis. If enough courses are recognized as equivalent, an upper semester may be permitted based on space availability. To check if your program offers advanced standing: Explore our Programs. Use the filter: Area of Interest → Foundations, Upgrading, Pathways. Programs with advanced standing will list it under Admission Requirements. Steps to Apply for Advanced Standing through Ontario Colleges 1. Declare Previous Education Before you can apply for advanced standing, you must declare your previous education in your Ontario Colleges application. To learn more about adding your previous education to your Ontario Colleges application, visit Adding Your Education. Important: If you do not declare your previous education, the advanced standing option will not appear, and you will not be permitted to apply. 2. Add the Program to Your Application In the Ontario Colleges application portal, search for the program code. Program codes can be found on Durham College’s program pages. For guidance on how to add a program to your application, please visit: Creating an Application. 3. Select the Correct Semester If the program offers an advanced standing option, you will see it under the Add button. When prompted to choose a semester, select the advanced standing entry point (e.g., Semester 5). 4. Request Your Transcript For students applying from another institution, you will need to arrange to have your official transcript sent to Ontario Colleges: If you attended an Ontario Public College or University: Request this directly through the Ontario Colleges application portal. If your transcript is from Durham College: You are not required to send a transcript. Credit transfer evaluations must be submitted through our course-by-course process. If a course does not appear in the database, we have not determined an equivalency and the course will need to be evaluated through a subject matter expert. View the database Letter of Permission If you are considering taking a course at another institution and transferring the course back to Durham College, you must first submit a Letter of Permission (LOP) application. Completed applications should be sent to transfers@durhamcollege.ca for further processing. Approval through the LOP process ensures that the course you plan to take will be recognized toward your Durham College credential. To be eligible for a Letter of Permission, you must: Be actively enrolled in a program at Durham College. Not be in the first semester of your program (as you will not have standing in your program). Not have any academic integrity alerts on your record. Not exceed residency requirements for program if approved (if in receipt of previous credits or PLAR). ADDITIONALLY: Course level at the host institution must match the course level of the Durham College course you’re seeking exemption from (i.e. diploma level for diploma level, degree level for degree level). Submitted course must be 80% similar in content/learning outcomes to the requested Durham College course. If approved, you must complete the course with the minimum grade requirement (60%/C or passing grade for the requested course, whichever is higher, as outlined by program requirements). Non-numeric grades will not be accepted for a Letter of Permission unless course outline indicates that the grading for the course equals at least 60% (i.e. any Pass/Satisfactory grading). Courses must be completed in the term approved through the Letter of Permission. If you are unable to meet this timeline then an official extension must be granted by the credit transfer office. Courses completed on a Letter of Permission will be recorded as a “TC” (transfer credit) and will not count toward term or program GPA (grade point average) If you are approved to complete a Letter of Permission for a course without having completed the Durham College course pre-requisites, approval on the Letter of Permission does not waive the pre-requisite classes. All courses in the program must be completed to graduate with the credential. Payment – There is a $16/course fee for each request. You must remain in your current course until a decision has been made in the case of a denial. Decisions will be communicated through the portal and/or student email account. MY STATUS IS SHOWING AS MISSING INFORMATION IN THE PORTAL. In order to process your credit transfer request, we must receive all supporting documentation. If your status is showing as missing information, we may be missing a transcript or course outline. To submit a transcript, we advise that you request to have an electronic transcript sent to Durham College directly at transfers@durhamcollege.ca. For course outlines, we will require a detailed course outline that must include a course description, learning outcomes, week-by-week breakdown and/or assessment criteria. Please email the detailed outline to transfers@durhamcollege.ca. HOW WILL APPROVED EQUIVALENCIES AND CREDITS APPEAR ON MY ACADEMIC RECORD? If approved for a credit transfer, you will receive a grade of “TC” for the course approved for exemption. The grade achieved at your previous institution will not be included in your GPA calculation. If approved using a previously completed Durham College course with the same credit weighting (i.e. a three-credit course for a three-credit course), your previous course (and grade) will be used to satisfy the requirement of the course in your new program and will be included in your GPA calculation. If you are using more than one course to equal two courses (i.e. COURSE A+COURSE B = COURSE AB) or your previous course had a different credit weighting than your current course (i.e. a four-credit course toward a three-credit course) you will be exempted from your current course. An exemption is recorded on your academic transcript as an “EX” and is not included in GPA calculation. I HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR A CREDIT TRANSFER; HOW DO I DROP MY CURRENT COURSE? If you have been approved for a credit transfer, the course will still appear on your schedule as part of the registration process. The course may be dropped afterward once the timetable change window opens. Please refer to the Important Dates for the specific date when timetable changes are permitted. To drop your approved credit transfer request, follow the DROP instructions listed here under Tutorials. I DISAGREE WITH A CREDIT TRANSFER EVALUATION, CAN I APPEAL? Typically, credit transfer evaluations can only be reversed if additional information is provided to support the request (such as a second course, a more detailed course outline, etc.). If you disagree with a credit transfer denial, please e-mail transfers@durhamcollege.ca to inquire about what information is needed. How can my military training and experience be recognized at Durham College? Durham College may recognize relevant military training, experience, and previously completed post-secondary studies through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and transfer credit opportunities. Depending on your background, you may be eligible to receive academic credit toward your program.
