The Access and Support Centre (ASC) services over 2300 students annually and advances Durham College’s commitment to inclusion in the learning environment.  

The ASC operates under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and works in partnership with students and faculty to ensure the academic environment is fully accessible to students with exceptionalities by providing friendly and confidential services to students with exceptionalities including accommodation plan development; counselling; coaching; advocacy; transition support; learning skills; adaptive technology training; alternate format for course material; peer coaching; and employment transition

 

Job Description:

As a Peer Coach in the ASC, you will facilitate 1-1 peer coaching sessions with students who require additional assistance with transitioning to the post-secondary environment.

A Peer Coach will act as a guide, offering support and advice based on your own academic experience.  As a peer coach, your role is not to counsel or tutor. The role is to act as a facilitator of knowledge. A peer coach will work with students to help them connect with the school; plan and organize their work; develop time management strategies; problem solves; develop positive learning skills; become familiar with DC Connect, and refer students to appropriate campus services for support.

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • A good understanding of the student resources available to students on campus
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • An interest in decreasing barriers and promoting success for individuals with exceptionalities

 

Terms:

  • Peer Coaches will need to be available from September 2020 to April 2021
  • Work hours will be Monday to Friday, generally between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm
