College life can be exciting and full of opportunities, but it can also come with stress and uncertainty. Research across Canada shows that many post-secondary students face mental health challenges, with anxiety, depression, and stress affecting their academic performance and daily life. At Durham College (DC), supportive and accessible resources are essential to helping students succeed.
“It is vital that we create a campus environment where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally,” said Tara Koski, Dean, Students. “We provide a compassionate and coordinated network of mental health supports, so students can access help when they need it, whether that is ongoing support or assistance during challenging moments.”
DC’s work is guided by a Mental Health & Well‑Being Framework, which sets clear direction for initiatives that:
- Promote well-being and resilience,
- Reduce barriers to support,
- Build a more inclusive and psychologically safe campus environment, and
- Coordinate mental health efforts across departments and services.
It reflects DC’s belief that mental health is integral to academic success, personal growth and a positive student experience. It also aligns with best practices adopted nationally to help institutions measure progress and improve supports over time.
What supports look like on campus
DC offers a range of year-round, accessible resources for students:
- Integrated 24/7 support with I.M. Well – students can access counselling, coaching and wellness resources through the free mobile app or phone line, anytime.
- DC’s Wellness Directory – a centralized, online hub linking students to supports across physical, emotional, social and academic wellness.
- Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC) – professional mental health services such as workshops, one-to-one support and therapy to help students develop coping skills, manage stress, and navigate challenges.
- The Wellness Den – a dedicated space to support well-being offering workshops, stress-relief activities, resource navigation, and community connection.
- Recovery College: Wellness Learning Hub – a peer-led, activity-based program co-designed with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences and Ontario Tech University that builds skills, connection and hope through shared learning.
- Academic and peer supports – including the Access and Support Centre and Student Academic Learning Services, and peer-led initiatives that reinforce belonging and academic confidence.
- Recreation and social opportunities – intramurals, sports clubs, fitness classes and events that support social connection and physical well-being.
Together, these resources help students access the right support at the right time, whether they’re managing everyday stress or seeking deeper connection and resilience.
Wellness Week brings campus well-being to life
From January 18 to 23, DC students are invited to take part in Wellness Week, a series of activities designed to help them recharge, connect, and focus on their well-being. As part of the week, the Durham College Student Association (DCSA) will be hosting Sam Demma as a keynote speaker on Bell Let’s Talk Day, highlighting the importance of mental health and encouraging reflection on empathy, hope, and connection.
Take the next step
Mental health is a shared journey and DC’s expanded supports are designed to make that journey a little easier. Students are encouraged to explore the full range of available services, participate in events and take proactive steps toward well-being.
