Well-Made Our Well Made workshops combine hands-on activities with mental health education, empowering you to grow socially, build resilience and prioritize your health and wellness. We hope to help you stay well during your time at school and provide an opportunity to express your creativity and learn skills that will last a lifetime. Durham College has partnered with the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences since 2020 to bring the Well Made (previously known as Recovery College) model of student-driven mental health support to our students. These workshop series are co-designed and co-facilitated by Durham College and Ontario Tech University students. They provide education about mental health and wellness and empower students to discover or rediscover connection, passion, hope and meaning. The Self-Care Series Looking for a way to take a break from campus life? Tap into your creativity and support your mental and emotional wellbeing with our Well Made: The Self-Care Series. This five-part, hands-on workshop series combines art, mindfulness and community to give you practical tools for managing stress, expressing yourself, and connecting with fellow students. Each activity is designed to create a calm, welcoming space where you can slow down, express yourself and support your well-being together. No prior artistic experience is required. What will we do? Create your own sleep jar to inspire calm, encourage restful nights and make mindful rest a regular practice. Connect with peers through shared artistic experiences and meaningful conversation in a supportive space. Experience mindful movement exercises that gently boost mood, release tension, and help you tune into your body. Explore personal growth by designing and painting your own plant pot as a reflection of your goals and creativity. Nourish your focus and energy by learning how simple, intentional food choices can boost your day. What’s the commitment? Recovery Colleges are strength-based mental health and well-being learning centres driven by peer education designed to support connection, a positive sense of self and hope. They promote an inclusive and supportive environment that builds on students’ strengths to promote growth, self-agency, and overcome the stigma surrounding mental health (Perkins et al., 2012). Recovery Colleges offer recovery-oriented courses in a range of topics that support mental health and well-being. Students are empowered to select courses to support their learning objectives and mental health goals. Courses are co-produced by those with lived experiences navigating wellness and those with professional experience. At the Recovery College: Wellness Learning Hub, Ontario Shores Peer Support Specialists and Durham College Peer Facilitators work alongside one another to co-facilitate the courses, with guest speakers being brought in for specific classes to provide subject matter expertise. What is Peer Support? Peer support involves at least two individuals with shared or similar experience who engage in a relationship for the development and growth of both parties. Shared experience and sharing personal stories can help validate our experiences, move away from societal stigma, and more towards an understanding and supporting environment. Some key features of peer support are companionship, empathy, empowerment, trusting relationship, helping others understand they aren’t alone, and helping others how to think of solutions based on our own knowledge and experience. As the value of such mutual relationships has been recognized, more formal peer roles (i.e., peer support specialists, peer facilitators) have been created in mental health services.
