The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a student volunteer service staffed with volunteers trained in First Responder or Emergency Medical Responder with the Canadian Red Cross. The are available year-round to respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced first aid on campus. In an emergency, access CERT by contacting Campus Security at ext. 2400 or calling 905.721.3211 (Oshawa and Whitby campus). Bleed Control Cabinets To keep the Durham College campus community safe in the event of a trauma injury, the college has over 30 bleed control kits throughout the Oshawa and Whitby campuses. These kits, found in clearly marked cabinets, contain the essentials needed to limit blood loss and stabilize an injured person. All kits include: A tourniquet Sheers Emergency bandages Compressed gauze Medical gloves Hemostatic Gauze Visual guide Emergency Blanket Permanent marker In an emergency, students and employees are encouraged to use the supplies as needed. When a bleed control cabinet is opened, an alarm will go off alerting Campus Security that a person requires immediate help. Training for new volunteers is provided in August, prior to the start of the term and again in January at the beginning of term.
