The Library’s DC Connect courses teach students how to find, evaluate and ethically use Library resources and other credible information sources for research and assignments. They are self-paced and include text, video, activities and quizzes.

We recommend that students start with the course Searching Omni for Books, Articles and More. The other two courses are valuable to students with more advanced research requirements or looking for more in-depth information literacy skills.

Searching Omni for Books, Articles and More

Level: Introductory

Students will learn how to search for books, articles and more in the Library’s academic search tool, Omni. This course covers keyword search strategies, filters for refining results, and specialized tools in Omni for creating citations, saving searches and results, and accessing full text for online resources. 

Introduction to Information Literacy

Level: Intermediate 

Audience: Students in courses with research requirements (Advanced)

Students will learn about types of information sources available in the library and how to find the right sources to meet their needs. This course covers all stages of the research process, from choosing a topic, planning a search strategy, reading citations and selecting and evaluating appropriate academic sources. 

Advanced Searching for Research Articles

Level: Advanced 

Students will learn how to apply advanced search skills to find research articles in the Library’s subject databases. This course covers advanced topics such as developing a research question, keyword and subject-heading searches, and advanced database search features.

Specialized Topics 

Library Research Skills for Knowledge Synthesis 

Gain valuable library research skills to navigate the process of completing a knowledge synthesis project, such as a systematic review or scoping review. Learn how to identify what type of review is right for you, develop and translate your initial search strategy, and best practices for retrieving, saving, and documenting your search results.
