At Durham College (DC), sustainability guides our decisions and practices in fostering the continued success and well‐being of our students, employees and stakeholders. DC believes in fostering sustainable behaviours and in sharing responsibility for social, environmental and economic stewardship, and strives toward the enhancement of awareness in education throughout the college and greater community.
We are committed to being environmental stewards and leading through specific actions that reduce our carbon footprint. In 2009, DC became a signatory of the Pan-Canadian Protocol for Sustainability, an initiative of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, to encourage member colleges and institutions to formalize their commitments and efforts towards sustainability. Sustainability is also addressed in the environmental, social and economic strategies included in both our Strategic Plan and Campus Master Plan and in 2018, DC was named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the second year in a row.
In 2017, DC also achieved a STARS Silver rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), building upon its previous STARS Bronze report. The organization has broad participation from numerous universities and colleges throughout North America and offers vast networking opportunities along with the option of participating in the STARS program. DC employs a full-time sustainability co-ordinator to help foster a culture of sustainability throughout the Oshawa and Whitby campuses and the Pickering Learning Site.
