What is Student and Career Development? Student and Career Development supports students from orientation through graduation and beyond by helping them build confidence, connections, leadership skills, and career readiness. Our services focus on three key areas: Start Strong at DC – transition and orientation support for new students. Student Leadership and Engagement – leadership development, volunteering, and community-building opportunities. Employment Coaching and Career Preparation – coaching, job search support and career development resources. How can Student and Career Development help me prepare for college? Before classes begin, incoming students can participate in Start Strong at DC, a series of online modules, in-person and virtual sessions, campus tours, and orientation events designed to help them feel confident, connected, and ready for their first day of classes. Start Strong at DC includes: Academic Welcome Day First-Year Campus Tours Online modules (PREP 1000) Virtual and in-person sessions Pre-arrival emails, transition events and services fairs Visit the Orientation microsite for more information. What is Academic Welcome Day? Academic Welcome Day is Durham College's official orientation event for new students. Students will: Receive a warm welcome from their faculty Learn important information about their program Meet classmates and campus staff Explore services and resources available to support their success Participate in social activities and campus events Students are encouraged to attend their Academic Welcome Day before classes begin. How can I get involved on campus? Student and Career Development offers opportunities to help students connect with others, build skills, and become engaged members of the Durham College community. Students can participate in: The DC Crew Leadership Program Mature Student Community Coffee Chats Campus engagement activities throughout the year These experiences help students develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and other transferable skills valued by employers. What is the DC Crew Leadership Program? DC Crew is designed to help students develop leadership skills, strengthen their employability, and build meaningful connections on campus. Through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and serving as positive role models, students work toward their personal and professional goals while becoming more engaged in the DC community. Students who complete all program requirements earn a Student Leadership Certificate, which can be added to their resume, LinkedIn profile, or professional portfolio. Depending on the number of volunteer hours completed, students may also receive DC swag and other recognition. What career services are available to students? Student and Career Development offers employment coaching and career preparation services to help students prepare for work during and after their studies. Services include: Resume, cover letter and LinkedIn support Job search strategies Networking advice Interview preparation Career-related workshops and events Skills translation, career exploration and planning Employment coaching is available to current students and alumni. What is the Hired portal? The Hired portal is Durham College's online career development platform for students and alumni. Through the Hired portal, students can: Book employment coaching appointments Search job opportunities Register for workshops and employer events Access career resources Receive notifications about new job postings How do I book an employment coaching appointment?
