Durham College and The Barrett Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture are proud to present the Barrett Centre Community Leader in Sustainable Development scholarship for DC students who are graduating in Spring 2026 or have graduated from DC within the last 3 years. Five $2,500 scholarships will support five dedicated DC students or recent graduates who are passionate about community resilience, food security, sustainable development and strengthening load systems. It reflects one of the Barrett Centre’s goals which is to develop a skilled, future-ready workforce in sustainable urban agriculture, resilient community building, and innovative academic programming. Timeline March 12, 2026 – Applications Open March 29, 2026 – Applications Close April 1-10, 2026 - Interviews April 17, 2026 – Successful recipients are contacted Eligibility and Selection Criteria Domestic students are eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria: Are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents Are graduating from Durham College with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Degree in Spring 2026, or have graduated from Durham College within the last three years (with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Degree) Have applied to Durham College’s Local College Certificate – Leadership in Sustainable Development (only those accepted into the certificate will be awarded a scholarship) Demonstrate a passion for their program and/or sustainable community development, and a sense of leadership in their community. We are seeking future-focused graduates who are passionate about advancing goals related to healthy communities, education, financial resilience, and food security. Graduates should be eager to get involved in their community through opportunities such as volunteering, peer-to-peer mentorship, participation in campus and community initiatives, or who want to grow their capacity to make an impact within their organization. Have community volunteer experience related to urban agriculture, community resilience, food security, mentorship, and/or sustainability.
