Recognizing Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This message is sent on behalf of Tara Koski, dean, Students.

On September 30, Durham College (DC) recognizes Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. DC is committed to reconciliation, with the goal of building respectful, reciprocal relationships that will contribute to better educational outcomes for all students.

Recognizing reconciliation requires genuine efforts to address the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous communities, and education plays a pivotal role in this process. Below are some opportunities to help our DC community learn more about the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and ways to take meaningful steps towards reconciliation.

  • Attend Recognizing Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Friday, September 29, 10:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Rotary Global Classroom in the Centre for Collaborative Education (CFCE 145), in-person and online

In partnership with Ontario Tech, DC students and employees are invited to hear from speakers Kevin Lamoureux, award winning scholar from the University of Winnipeg; Elder Dorothy Taylor, a Mississauga Ojibwe Elder from Curve Lake First Nation known for her work and traditional teachings about the sacredness of water; and Elder Dr. Shirley Williams, who is Midewiwin and a member of the Bird Clan from the Wikwemikong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island.

Durham College (DC) is committed to providing our students with the best education possible. With that in mind, we are participating in the2022-2023 College Quality Assurance Audit Process (CQAAP), a provincially-mandated external review of the work we do to ensure academic quality.

Next week, the college will host the CQAAP auditors for a virtual site visit from June 19 to 21. The auditors will speak to pre-selected representatives from all areas of the college, including students and staff.

At DC, we are committed to transparency and accountability in all aspects of our operations and business. Each of Ontario’s 24 colleges of applied arts and technology participates in CQAAP every five to seven years.

If you have any questions about CQAAP, you can learn more online.

    Accessibility updates on campus

The Durham College (DC) Accessibility Coordinating Committee (ACC) helps ensure that accessibility updates are implemented on campus to make DC as inclusive as possible.

In honour of National AccessAbility Week taking place May 28 to June 3, we are happy to share a number of DC’s 2022-2023 accomplishments and goals to celebrate and promote accessibility on campus:

    • Purchased mobile charging stations for each campus.
    • Hosted an inclusive photoshoot at Oshawa campus that showcased many of the accessibility features at DC.
    • Updated Accessibility Tours for both campuses, including the re-implementation of bus tours at Open House events.
    • Continue to identify and remove physical barriers on both campuses.
    • Continue to audit software used by students and faculty to ensure Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) compliancy.

The ACC is guided by DC’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, meets several times each year and includes members from across the college as well as community partners. We follow the AODA and the Integrated Accessibility Standards. The ACC will reconvene in September and continue to make each DC campus as accessible and inclusive as possible.

DC Recognizes International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

This message is sent on behalf of Don Lovisa, president, Durham College.

Today, Durham College (DC) acknowledges the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which draws attention to the ongoing violence and discrimination that is still a reality for members of the two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQQIA+) community.

At Durham College, we stand with members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community and reaffirm our commitment that everyone has the right to be safe and feel that they belong, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. In recognition and support of this day and our 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, we have raised the progressive pride flag at both our Oshawa and Whitby campuses.

This year’s global theme – Together Always: United in Diversity – celebrates the many sexual and gender diversities and underscores the power of solidarity, community and allyship across different identities, movements and borders.

Join me in standing against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia and ensuring that Durham College remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.
